The manager of Alton Jobcentre Plus has told me she will book people onto the session. Contact me directly for her contact details.

Hi this is my first posting on this site so apologies If I stumble a bit. It is asking a lot for every jobcentre to have experts on higher value jobs but as a department it should be possible to put together a small team of specialists to lead it and offer assistance to the front line. Some of this using telephones and Online techniques but also visiting the centre to meet and offer advice to candidates.

If a skilled candidate appears the local centre can refer them and the central team could then support them and assist the candidate. Given the resources that ought to be found within a large department such a team should be able to become relevant and highly skilled very quickly and by getting potential high earners back to work help GB PLC.

The commercial agencies would be happy to get involved if it means they get a supply of good candidates they can place and earn their commision on. Much of this help would be experience and know-how and current information.

I agree with the 2 posts to date. With one exception, the staff at Farnborough JCP are excellant but realise they don't have the necessary support to help anyone that is looking for anything above minimum wage. I even highlighted the mismatch between what Gordon Brown was saying about helping those made redundant with the reality at the local JCP to Gerald Howarth, my local MP.

Truth to tell...people who work in JobCentres would probably be the first to admit they have little to offer in the way of help to anyone a little higher up the food chain than the usual suspects they get in there.

It does make for some entertaining experiences though...at my 13 week "chat" when the chap suggested that I should look further afield, he was a little taken aback when I pointed out that I actually have feelers out all over western Europe and in the USA - and have about as much chance of working locally as I do of becoming Pope!

I think that JobCentre Plus organisation needs all the help it can get as the service it currently offers is woefully inadequate for any white collar executives! Its all about finding the right code to fill in on their forms for them. I mentioned that I had applied for a role at the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and they write down that I want to be a leisure centre manager!! Sorry this is a rant but I get very frustrated!

Sad but very true. Two years ago I found out that London is the 4th largest French city - in terms of French nationals living here. Statistics like this make you sit up and pay attention.

Has anyone read the Obama book 'The audacity of Hope'? He wrote this a couple of years ago and it is very thought provoking - covers the same ground as Frank has mentioned.

More than that the new economy is increasingly online and that means that the 'competition' is global and usually multi-lingual. Everyone should be sending 5 - 10 hours per week on personal development - reading, researching, writing, blogging, networking. We are in a world of over-supply of labour and your degree of 20 years ago is gathering dust and hardly relevant anymore.
